What to say when a caller claims to be your grandkid

A short script that works even when you’re rattled.

Sample guide. Scammers use urgency and secrecy (“don’t tell Mom”) so you act before you think. A short script gives you something to say while you catch your breath.

The steps

1

Slow the call down

Say, “I’m going to call you right back.” A real family member will understand. A scammer will push.

2

Call back on a number you trust

Use the number saved in your phone, not one the caller gives you.

3

Check with another relative

Call a parent or sibling of the person who supposedly called.
